Although national research is being undertaken into the possibility of the plant being used in the production of anti-obesity drugs, Eden staff are more interested in the plant as another educational tool in informing the public about the diversity of plant life.
Horticulturist Jann Coles said: "We are delighted that it has flowered for what may be the first time in the UK, here at Eden. It's a privilege to be looking after such a rare and beautiful plant, especially one with such interesting scientific potential."
While the plant's beneficial effects might be relatively recent news for researchers in the West, it has long been a favourite with the San bushmen of the Kalahari who eat it to suppress their appetites on hunting trips.
It contains a previously unknown molecule about 10,000 times as active as glucose. Glucose fires the nerve cells in the brain to tell people when they are full and it seems that Hoodia has the same effect.
Being from an arid region, Hoodia does not feature in Eden's rainforest or Mediterranean biomes but will be used in Eden's next phase, The Edge.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2169093687729759059.post-19626322630276514962007-07-15T06:04:00.000-07:002007-07-15T06:11:52.876-07:00Hoodia: loose weight easily.
You must seen Hoodia gordonii ads in mass media. Now it’s one of the most popular products in the weight loss industry. Hoodia claims to curb your appetite by making you feel full. Hoodia has a compound (found by scientists) P57 that mimics glucose effect on the nerve cells in the brain. This element reduces the appetite.

Hoodia gordonii is a cactus-like plant found in the Kalahari Desert. The San Bushmen living there have used Hoodia for thousands of years in order to reduce hunger during hunting trips. It has been reported that they can suppress their appetites for 24 hours by chewing on hoodia.

In 2004 the media began to delve into hoodia. The whole story started when CBS correspondent Lesley Stahl went to the Kalahari Desert to find an authentic version of this plant. According to the story, Stahl reports that She had no after effects, no funny taste, no queasy stomach, and no racing heart. She also wasn’t hungry all day. And, she had no desire to eat or drink the whole day.

Phytopharm’s website (Phytopharm is the developer of the hoodia product) states, that in 2001 they completed a double-blind, placebo-controlled study in overweight. The large doses of Hoodia extract caused a significant reduction in the average daily calorie intake. In addition, a statistically significant reduction in body fat was also observed.

The authenticity of Hoodia – is the most serious problem today. Since hoodia is very rare, the Kalahari Desert is the only place where Hoodia Gordonii grows. Sellers use sneaky ways to trick customers into thinking that they actually get hoodia right there. Only a CITES certificate ensures that Hoodia is authentic. There is opinion that 80% of hoodia sold is counterfeit.
